Ashwini Kumars are son of surya or sun god. Sun was married to Sanjana, daughter of Viswakarma. But due to heat and intensity of surya, she spent time away from him. During one of sanjanas absence, she created a shadow of her whose name was “chaya” and told chaya to take care of her husband. But Surya fell in love with chaya while her wife was away. when sanjana returned, and got to know about this betrayal, she became very furious. She took a shape of a female horse or mare and galloped away. Surya, realizing his mistake turned himself into a male horse or stallion and galloped after her. He finally caught upto her in a beautiful meadow and they made love. Thus Ashwini twins are born.Their names are Dashraa and Nasatya, but they are widely known as ashwini kumars.
The Ashwins are known as physicians of God. They are pictured as divine, mystical doctors who ride in a golden chariot and bring their healing energy down to earth.
