How to Calculate Upapada Lagna
Calculation of Upapada Lagna is given in Jaimini Sutra and also in Brihat Parasari Hora Shastra. These two are one of the Best Book to Study and Learn Vedic astrology. Upapada Lagna is a Special Concept in Vedic Astrology through Which We can Know about Marriage and Relationship, Life Partner, Timing of Relationship etc.
I have found this concept very useful and effective. I use it always while checking Spouse and Marriage related Matters.
As per Sage Jaimini and Rishi Parashar, Upapada Lagna is the Arudha Pada of the 12th House.
Arudha Pada is the Image of a House. If we want know how the World Sees us or the Perception of Outer world about us, We need to See the Arudha of a House. How people See , Judge or Perceive us is based on Arudha.
If a Couple Post nice pictures in Facebook or Instagram, if they go to Vacation togethor, Nice Public Apperance etc, People or Outer World thinks that the Couple is Very happy and the relationship is very Good. This may not be Always true but this is how people will judge us.
Upapada Lagna is the image of our relationship towards Outer World. If it is Well placed and Strong, it indicates that the Image of our relationship will be Good to other People.
Generally Physical Apperance of Spouse can be known from Planets in the 7th house and from the 7th house of Navamsa. But Upapada Lagna will give the conformation of birth chart and Navamsa chart.
Calculation for Upapada Lagna
The calculation of Upapada Lagna is simple. Find the twelfth house in your chart and see where the Lord of the twelfth has travelled from the twelfth house. Then you can count the same number of positions from that place.
The Step by step approach should be as below.
- Check the Placement of 12th Lord
Count the Position of 12th Lord from the 12th house.
- count from 12th Lord
Now You have to count same No of House from the 12th Lord.
- Determining Upapada Lagna
After that the Sign where you Reached is known as the Upapada Lagna.
- Example
Suppose a person is born with Aries Lagna and his 12th Lord Jupiter is placed in Cancer. From 12th house Pisces to cancer, the distance is of 5 Sign. So we will add 5 sign from Cancer and we will reach Scorpio Sign. Scorpio will be the Upapada Lagna for this native.
- Exception
Upapada Lagna can not be in the 6th house. Any Arudha Pada can not be in the 7th sign from the Main Sign. As Upapada is the Arudha of 12th house, it can not be in the just opposite sign i.e. 6th house.
Now Lets make this concept clear with Some example charts.
This is a Horoscope with Virgo Ascendant. The 12th House is Leo and the 12th Lord Sun is placed in the 9th house Taurus. As 12th Lord is placed in Taurus, we have to count the Taurus from the 12th Sign i.e. Leo. It has traveled 10 Signs from Leo. Now count 10 Signs from Taurus where the 12th Lord is placed and it is Aquarius. So Aquarius will be the Upapada Lagna.
This is a Horoscope of Saggitarius Ascendant and the 12th house is Scorpio. The 12th Lord Mars is in the 10th house Virgo Which is 11th house from 12th Sign Scorpio. Now count 11 Signs from Virgo Sign and it is Cancer. So the Upapada Lagna is Cancer and Upapada Lagna Lord is Moon.
In this Way you can calculate the Upapada Lagna of your chart.
Now a days most of the good astrology Software gives the UL in the chart. So the effort of manual calculation is Reduced Significantly.
Now a days every Astrologer uses 12th house for the Upapada calculation but If you read the Older version of the Books written on Jaimini Astrology, a Group of astrologer Suggested to use 7th house for the calculation of Upapada.
Prof. B. S. Surya Narayan Rao in his 1949 Book on Jaimini astrology Written that ” Some comentetaors of Jaimini Sutra Says that take the 7th house from Lagna or Ascendant and find the Arudha from it. This becomes the Upapada Lagna.
In the first example chart, the 7th house is the Pisces or Meena which is Ruled by Jupiter. The 12th Lord Jupiter is in capricorn Sign. This is 11th Sign away from Pisces. So count 11 Sign from Capricorn and it is Scorpio. So if we follow this Rules, Scorpio becomes the Upapada Lagna.
However, majority of Person is in the opinion to consider 12th House for Upapada Lagna. I also uses it and get Satisfactory results during my Analysis. I also Suggest you to use 12th house for Upapada calculation.
After Calculating the Upapada Lagna, I always check where the Lord is Placed and Which Planets are conjunct with UL. This will Give us a fair idea about our Future Spouse or Life Partner. How our Partner will Look and How our Partner will treat us can be known from UL.
If you want to Know about the timing of a Serious Relationship, You can use the Chara Dasha of Jaimini. Normal Vimsottari Dasha will not be applicable here.
