What is Atmakaraka planet and How to find Atmakaraka Planet in Vedic Astrology
Atma Means Soul and Karaka Means Significator. So it is the significator of desire for a particular soul. There are Two types of Atmakaraka Planet-Natural and Char Atmakaraka. Sun is the Natural Atmakaraka planet in every horoscope. The planet with highest degree in Natal chart is considered as char Atmakaraka, going forward which will be termed as AK. Except Ketu all other 8 planets can become Atmakara in Vedic astrology.
AK plays a Vital role in every horoscope. It is like the king of the horoscope. It actually shows the desire or the goal of the soul for which it has taken the rebirth.The main purpose of the Atma or the soul is to meet with the parmatma or god and to become free the cycle of birth and rebirth. This is called Moksha. So Atmakaraka Planet is actually giver of Moksha.To attain this, one should lead the satwik or dharmik path.By looking at the strength of the AK we can tell how strong the individual is in a soul sense, how strongly they are connected to their higher selves. A strong atmakaraka planet (having the planet in good dignity, with benefics, or aspected by benefics can all add to the strength in descending order) signifies a strong individual and distractions can not deter them from their dharmic path. A weak Atmakaraka in vedic astrology will indicate a native that will be more confused in the world. They will not have the focus that a strong AK can give them and thus may end up suffering. The Sign which Atmakaraka planet occupies in Navamsa, is known as Karakamsa. This word basically has two part- Karaka i.e. Atmakaraka and Amsa i.e. Navamsa. There is another way to check the career from Karakamsa. Use the Planets position as per the original rasi chart but instead of using the Lagna or Ascendant of Rasi chart, use Karakamsa as the Lagna. For example if a person is born with Mesh rashi and he is having Jupiter Atmakaraka and Jupiter is plaed in Sagittarius Navamsa. So Sagittarius will become the Karakamsa Lagna. Result of Different Atmakaraka Planets
If a Natual Malefic Planet like Rahu becomes AK, it signifies very good spiritual development whereas Benefic planet signifies much less. Rahu was the Atmakaraka for Ramkrishna Paramhansa. But the Vimhottori Dasha of Atmakaraka planet is very troublesome and full of sufferings specially if it is malefic. But if a person is spiritually inclined, it will be helpful in its dasha. A retrograde AK indicates a deep-rooted desire as being the cause of the birth. This has to be seen from the nature of the planet which becomes the AK. If the Atmakaraka Planet is exalted, it shows that the soul has done very good deeds in his/her past lives and individual with debilitated Atmakaraka planet in vedic astrology will indicate a fallen soul or who has done bad deeds in past lives. Ishta devata:Karakamsa Lagna and 12th house from it shows the Ishta Devata of the native. the 12th house from Karakamsa is called “jivanmuktamsa”. This is the house signifying the emancipation of the soul and we have to examine this house to know about ishta devata. If there is one planet in 12th house from Karakamsa, the rulling deity of that planet becomes the Ishta devata. If there is more than one planet, we have to choose the strongest one.
